Do you enjoy oracle card decks but have yet to find one that fits your specific requirements? So you considered creating your own and now you’re wondering how to go about it. I’ve written about this before here, but keep returning to this great topic!

If you want to make your own beautiful oracle cards, the first thing to bear in mind is that the competition is unprecedented. If you search for “oracle cards” on Etsy now, you’ll get over 44,000 results, so if you want to design your own oracle card deck (or manufacture and sell your own tarot cards), you need to stand out.

However whether you want to build a “classic” Colette Baron-Reid, Doreen Virtue, or Moonology oracle deck, or something more modern and inclusive, the fundamental procedures are the same.

Let’s go through the eight stages that will help you create your own beautiful tarot or oracle card deck.

1. CHOOSE YOUR THEME

The first step is to choose your theme. This can be done intuitively, or you can sit down and make a list of what you’d like to see in your deck. Do you want to focus on the four elements? The seasons? The chakras? Angelic beings?

The possibilities are endless.

2. GET INSPIRED BY OTHERS

Once you have an idea of the topics you’d like to focus on, it’s time to get inspired by others. Look at other oracle decks out there, and get a feel for the kinds of images and messages that resonate with you.

3. CREATE A SKETCHBOOK

Start a sketchbook and begin jotting down ideas for your deck. Draw pictures, write down phrases, and keep track of any symbols or images that come to you.

4. SELECT YOUR IMAGES

Once you have a good selection of sketches, it’s time to select your images. This can be done in a variety of ways: you could print out pictures from the internet, or cut out images from magazines and newspapers. If you’re feeling creative, you could even paint your own images.

5. CREATE THE BACK OF THE CARDS

The back of the cards is an important part of the deck, as it often contains information about the card itself itself. You could include the name of the deck, the artist, or a brief message about the cards, or you could keep it simple and have the same back on each one.

6. DECIDE ON THE CARD SIZE

The size of your cards is up to you, but remember that they will need to be large enough to fit all of the necessary information on them.

7. CREATE THE FRONT OF THE CARDS

Once you’ve decided on the size of your cards, it’s time to create the front. This is where you can get creative, and include images and messages that resonate with you.

PRO TIP: Use Canva to lay your card deck out professionally before you send it to a printer!

8. TEST YOUR DECK

Once you’ve finished your deck, it’s important to test it out. Use an online printer like these people to get one deck printed and try using it for a few readings, and see if the messages resonate with you. If they don’t, go back to the drawing board and make some changes.

Creating your own oracle card deck can be a fun and rewarding experience, and it’s a great way to connect with your intuition. So go ahead and get creative! If you need some more tips, take a look at my free guide to making and selling your own deck right here.
