Whether you are thinking of starting a product or service based business or a combination of the two, you will need a third-party platform to help you sell your products or services, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a traditional website.

Although ConvertKit is predominantly an email marketing platform, the useful ConvertKit Commerce solution is proving to be particularly powerful for those who sell digital – and even physical – products and services.

What is ConvertKit?

ConvertKit has a reputation for being an excellent email marketing automation tool, which is known for its simplicity and ability to create highly converting email campaigns.

However, ConvertKit Commerce is a feature packed addition which will allow you to sell your products within the email platform, without the need for a separate eCommerce platform such as WooCommerce or Shopify.

The ConvertKit Commerce tool launched in 2020, and both new and existing users of the email platform have begun to use the features.

The benefits of ConvertKit

ConvertKit Commerce – This is the main benefit for those which sell online, with products such as online courses, subscriptions, printables, eBooks and recurring memberships.

For example, you can upload a PDF file to ConvertKit, which will be delivered to the buyers’ email address when they make a purchase. Alternatively, it is possible to promote and sell recurring and one-time coaching sessions and courses to your clients via customisable product pages.

Product page building – The functionality is excellent, and I always appreciate the excellent user interface. You will find various templates, editing options and advanced automation tools, designed to help you improve conversions.

If you do not have a website, there is no need to worry as the landing page is hosted on the ConvertKit server and domain.

Email and newsletter features – ConvertKit offers an excellent set of useful features, including subscriber management, autoresponders and form building capabilities. Simply choose the Broadcast option to send an individual email, or the Sequences option which will allow you to setup a string of automated and related emails.

There are a variety of templates available which can be easily edited in terms of content and background colour, button style and font.

Analytics – A great benefit of ConvertKit is the ability to really drill down into the analytics behind your marketing campaigns, including purchase information, shopping channels and website visitors.

By analyzing the report, you will be able to study the conversion rates of your email campaigns, so that you can make the changes needed to continue to increase sales.

Ease of use – ConvertKit is designed to walk you through the setup process, so when you first log in, you will be asked whether you already use email marketing software and whether you have a website.

The interface and options will then update to suit your exact requirements, with a useful checklist to help you get started with the array of email tools. There is a range of material to help you get started, including useful demo videos which I recommend watching.

Pricing – ConvertKit Commerce is available on all ConvertKit plans, so if you sign up to the excellent free plan which allows users to send an unlimited number of emails to up to 1,000 subscribers each month, you will be able to use ConvertKit Commerce.

However, you will be charged a processing fee of 3.5% and $0.30 for each transaction, although this is very competitive.

My top 4 ConvertKit features

Checkout process – The checkout page is very well designed, with buyers able to review their order, provide their email address and enter their payment card details. By keeping the design simple and easy to use, conversion rates are improved with successful payments directed to a confirmation page.

The pages can be completely customised to suit your brand, with a useful ‘Download Now’ button available for those who are selling downloadable items and printables.

Subscriber management – ConvertKit uses email tags to help you manage your subscribers, simply specify the tags you would like to attach to your imported contacts.

As your contacts are added, you will be able to choose which automated emails, forms and tags are added, which is great for course-based businesses and those with product suites. It is even possible to import your subscribers from other email marketing tools.

Segmentation – Whether you are looking to sell printables or a signature program, being able to deliver personalised content to your customers is key. This is one of the great capabilities of ConvertKit, as it is possible to create segments for your customers based on their purchase behaviour, location, and subscription date.

Autoresponders – The ConvertKit platform will allow you to set sequences of emails which are sent automatically, whenever a customer meets a condition or takes a required action. For example, if a customer purchases a printable, it is possible to create an automated email to follow up with additional products 3 days later.

There are various templates available which are perfect for the businesses I work with, such as automated webinar hosting emails, product launches and abandoned cart emails.

Who can use ConvertKit?

The email marketing and eCommerce software is primarily designed for bloggers and businesses which sell products online, including both physical and non-physical products and services.

It is a great choice for those with specific audiences, as the simplicity of the software will allow you to sell products and create emails through a simple platform, which is designed with your entire customer base in mind.

Whether you are ready to launch your new physical product or are planning the sale of an entire product suite, ConvertKit is a great choice for those with some prior coding knowledge.

Although, if you are new to designing and coding, you will still be able to create product pages and email campaigns with ease.

Is ConvertKit the best choice for my business?

ConvertKit is clearly a platform which is designed with mechanics in mind, so you can be sure that you will benefit from cleverly designed product pages and emails, with sales and the growth of your business in mind.

There are so many areas where ConvertKit simply excels beyond competitors, and it is possibly the first company to combine these levels of eCommerce features and email marketing tools within a single platform.
