Do you love oracle card decks, but never found one that quite met your needs? So you thought about making your own, and now you’re wondering how to make and sell your own oracle card deck? Find out more here.
If you want to create your own oracle cards, the first thing to keep in mind is that the competition is HUGE. If you put “oracle cards” into Etsy right now, you’ll get over 44,000 hits, so if you want to design your own oracle card deck (or make and sell your own tarot cards), you are going to need a plan AND a stand-out design.
Whether you want to create a “traditional” style deck in the manner of Colette Baron-Reid, Doreen Virtue, or the Moonology oracle cards, or you are interested in a more modern, inclusive design, the core steps are the same.
So let’s go through the eight stages that you need to create your oracle card deck.

1 Dream Customer
Who is your target audience? Ask yourself who your dream customer is – what age, background, style, likes, and dislikes. What card deck would she be buying today, given that your creation hasn’t been launched yet? Consider groups that are underserved in the industry.
2 Stand Out Visuals
How is your oracle deck design going to stand out from the competition? There are three main areas to think about – your visuals, your messages, and your brand identity. You need to have something DIFFERENT about your deck that will make you stand out in the eyes of your dream customer.
3 A Talented Artist – Or Creativemarket?
Decide WHO is going to do the artwork. Instagram is a great place to find talented artists and illustrators looking for work. Bear in mind that you are looking at up to 50 different illustrations, although your artist could COMBINE different design elements to create all of your cards out of perhaps 20 different elements. Consider offering a partnership if you can’t afford to pay for premium artwork. Never ask an artist to work for free for the “exposure”!
Alternatively, you could buy a set of illustrations that fit your style on Creativemarket (don’t be afraid to spend a few days searching) and “assemble” the elements yourself in Canva or Photoshop. This would cost significantly less, but your words will REALLY need to carry the day!

4 Inspiring Content
Do your research, and be 100% clear on what makes an inspirational oracle card deck that your dream customer will turn to every day. Write expansively and edit your words fearlessly, to hone the perfect set of messages that will meet your dream customer’s needs and support her when she needs it most.
Printing an oracle card deck is less expensive than some other products. When you have your whole deck saved as pdf or large jpg/png/tiff files AND a box design (you will need to hire a graphic designer for this), you can contact printers both in your own country (Google) or overseas (Alibaba) and start getting some quotes.
Great photography can make or break your new oracle card business. A good graphic designer should be able to take your print files and create lifelike mockups for you, which will often be cheaper than photography. Check out these tips to DIY your own successful photo shoot.
7 Selling Your Own Oracle Card Deck
You can sell your own oracle card in three main different ways. First is via your own website – Shopify is a good, easy platform for this. Secondly is via Etsy – competitive, but a good place to find enthusiastic customers. Thirdly is via wholesale, which means selling your own oracle card decks for about 30% of the retail price to stores.
You will need a highly active Instagram presence to drive your audience. Consider offering free and paid digital products and services around your cards as well, to boost your mailing list. Pinterest is also a great place to (slowly, admittedly!) build organic traffic, and when you are ready to sell, a well-targeted Facebook/Instagram ad campaign could pay off.
Be active in the right Facebook groups, and consider starting your OWN around the philosophy of your own cards.
You can join the Make It Sell It Facebook Group here where I can answer any of your startup questions directly – I’d love to meet you there!
So now you know what the basic steps are for creating your own oracle card deck – and SELLING them. I know you’re not just thinking about the money here, but your message will reach more people if your business is financially sustainable.
